Qatar Finally Lets PH Official Reach Detained Filipinos

The Qatari government has finally allowed a Philippine labor attaché to meet with Filipino detainees who were arrested for holding a political protest without permission, according to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).

What Happened?

A total of 20 Filipinos were arrested in Qatar for participating in a political demonstration. The protest was reportedly held to oppose the arrest of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Since Qatar has strict laws against unauthorized gatherings, the Filipino protesters were taken into custody.

Who Is Helping Them?

DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac confirmed that a Philippine Embassy team in Qatar is assisting the detainees. This team includes the labor attaché, who is also a lawyer.

“Around 17 of them are currently being assisted by our embassy team, and our labor attaché is providing legal support,” Cacdac said.

The embassy officials were able to visit the detainees and reported that they are physically okay, but they still face legal challenges under Qatari law.

Who Are Still in Jail?

Of the 20 Filipinos arrested:

  • 12 are men

  • 5 are women

  • 3 are minors (children)

The three children were released, but their parents remain in detention. The embassy is providing legal help to secure their release.

What Happens Next?

Qatari authorities are still investigating the case. If formal charges are filed, the Filipinos could face up to three years in prison.

The Philippine government has promised to support the detained Filipinos and is working closely with Qatari officials to resolve the issue.

“We are offering all possible legal assistance,” Cacdac assured.

The Philippine Government’s Response

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed that they will provide legal support if charges are filed. Meanwhile, Malacañang (the Philippine government’s executive office) assured that they are monitoring the situation and will do everything they can to help the detained Filipinos.

Final Thoughts

This situation is still developing, and the fate of the detained Filipinos depends on Qatar’s legal system. The Philippine government continues to negotiate for their release, while their families wait for updates.
