Mary Jane Veloso May Move to Women’s Jail After Return

Filipino drug convict Mary Jane Veloso, who has been on Indonesia’s death row for over a decade, may soon be transferred to the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City. Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr. announced that preparations are underway to accommodate Veloso if her transfer to the Philippines takes place.

Awaiting DOJ’s Final Decision

While the CIW is preparing for Veloso’s possible arrival, the final decision on her detention lies with the Department of Justice (DOJ). Justice Assistant Secretary Mico Clavano has indicated that Veloso will be processed at the CIW due to her sentence.

“We are ready to accept her upon her arrival,” Catapang assured. However, her transfer will follow specific protocols, starting with a health check and isolation for five days. Afterward, a two-month assessment will determine whether she will be placed in maximum, medium, or minimum security.

Health and Safety First

Justice Undersecretary Raul Vasquez confirmed that Veloso’s health would be evaluated upon her return. If she requires medical care, she will be sent to a hospital instead of the corrections facility.

“Our priority is her health. If she is suffering from a serious illness, she will receive proper treatment before being detained,” Vasquez emphasized.

Preparations Underway for Transfer

The Philippine Embassy, along with Indonesia’s Corrections and Immigration offices, is working on the details of Veloso’s transfer. DOJ’s attached agencies, including the Bureau of Immigration (BI), National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), and BuCor, are prepared to facilitate her return.

The Indonesian government has expressed its desire to transfer Veloso by Christmas, following a high-level agreement between the two countries.

A Decade of Uncertainty

Mary Jane Veloso was convicted of drug trafficking in Indonesia in 2010 and sentenced to death. Her case gained international attention, with many advocating for her clemency. Since the Philippines does not implement the death penalty, her sentence could be commuted to life imprisonment.

The final decision rests with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., who has the power to pardon Veloso or adjust her sentence. Veloso’s family and supporters have already appealed to the President for clemency, hoping for a second chance for the embattled Filipino worker.

What’s Next for Veloso?

Veloso’s return symbolizes a significant step in her long legal battle. Her transfer marks the start of another chapter where her fate lies in the hands of Philippine authorities. Whether she receives clemency or serves a life sentence, Veloso’s case remains a powerful reminder of the complexities surrounding justice and international relations.
