Ex-Quiapo Fish Vendor Turned Dubai Filmmaker Dreams of Hollywood

At 22, Vincent Escobido, also known as Vincent Augus, is living proof that dreams can come true with hard work and determination. From helping his grandmother sell fish in Quiapo, he has become the youngest indie filmmaker in Dubai, with 300 stories and millions of views under his belt. And now, his sights are set on Hollywood.

The Humble Beginnings

Vincent’s journey started in the bustling streets of Quiapo, Manila, where he would help his grandmother, Lola Deling, sell fish. Every weekend, starting at 3 a.m., they would travel from the Navotas Fish Port to Quiapo, often facing challenges like drivers refusing to let them board jeepneys with their buckets of fish.

“Sometimes, kind drivers would let us on, but many days were tough,” Vincent recalled. When the city’s cleanup drive forced vendors out of Quiapo, Vincent even resorted to hiding fish under his shirt to ensure they had food to bring home.

Despite the hardships, these experiences sparked creativity in young Vincent. “There were so many dramatic moments in my mind back then,” he said, unknowingly laying the foundation for his future as a storyteller.

A New Chapter in Dubai

In 2019, Vincent’s parents brought him and his sibling to Dubai for what was supposed to be a short vacation. However, the pandemic extended their stay, and Vincent’s life took a significant turn.

He initially worked as a kitchen assistant in a Japanese restaurant and later in sales at a digital gallery. But his passion for filmmaking reignited when Elvin Mark Santos of TBON Dubai, an indie film production house, gave him an opportunity.

With no formal training, Vincent quickly immersed himself in filmmaking, creating stories that resonated with audiences. His relatable themes and fresh approach earned him a loyal following in the Filipino community.

Passion Meets Perseverance

Vincent’s love for acting and filmmaking began in the Philippines, where he participated in school plays and theater. Despite facing multiple rejections in TV auditions, he never gave up.

“The closest I got to stardom back then was being an extra in a movie, but I didn’t even make it to the final cut,” he said with a laugh.

In Dubai, Vincent found a second chance to pursue his dreams. Today, he’s taking an IT Programming course at Dubai British School while honing his craft as a filmmaker.

“I haven’t overcome all challenges yet, but I’m surrounded by good people who support me, especially my parents,” Vincent shared.

Hollywood Dreams

Vincent is now focused on creating his first full-length film, which he hopes to write and direct himself. His ultimate goal? To participate in Hollywood and bring his unique stories to the global stage.

“By God’s will, I’ll make it happen,” he said confidently.

Gratitude and Inspiration

Vincent credits his success to his grandmother, Lola Deling, who taught him perseverance, and to his TBON Dubai family, including mentors and colleagues who guided him along the way.

“They picked me up when I was just starting. I’m forever grateful,” he said.

A Story Worth Sharing

From selling fish in Quiapo to becoming a celebrated indie filmmaker in Dubai, Vincent Escobido’s journey is an inspiring tale of resilience, passion, and the power of never giving up. With Hollywood in his sights, this young dreamer is just getting started.
