In 2023, Italy saw a rise in same-sex civil unions, reaching the highest number in six years. There were 3,019 same-sex unions, marking a 7.3% increase from the previous year. However, this number is still small compared to the 184,000 weddings for heterosexual couples. The rise in unions comes at a time when LGBTQ+ groups say the current conservative government is making life harder for them, especially with new laws limiting rights for same-sex couples, like banning surrogacy abroad. These changes are seen as a step backward for LGBTQ+ rights in Italy.
