Thailand Protests Myanmar Navy Shooting at Thai Fishing Boats

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand is upset after Myanmar’s navy fired on Thai fishing boats, killing one fisherman and injuring two others. The boats were also detained by Myanmar’s navy. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said Thailand doesn’t believe the Thai boats intentionally entered Myanmar’s waters and disagrees with the violence.

The incident happened on Saturday near Thailand’s southern province of Ranong, where two of 15 fishing boats were shot at. The Thai government is asking for more information and wants Myanmar to release four fishermen who are still being held.

Thailand’s Defense Minister sent a letter to Myanmar asking for details and a return of the Thai boat and crew. Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa also contacted Myanmar’s government for clarification.

Myanmar has been facing political unrest since a military coup in 2021, and this incident adds to the ongoing tension between the two countries.
