Super Typhoon Pepito threatens Bicol; Manila on alert

A powerful and dangerous storm, Super Typhoon Pepito, is quickly approaching the Bicol region in the Philippines. The weather bureau Pagasa warns that a “potential catastrophe” could happen, as the storm gets closer to land.

Strong Warnings Issued

  • Signal No. 5, the highest storm warning, has been raised in Catanduanes, meaning the province is at risk of severe damage. People there should prepare for very strong winds that could destroy houses and trees, as well as cause massive power outages.
  • Signal No. 4 is up in parts of Camarines Sur and Albay. Here, people can expect destructive winds, heavy rain, and possible flooding.
  • Signal No. 3 is raised in places like Polillo Islands, Quezon, Camarines Norte, and parts of Northern Samar. It means strong winds and heavy rains are expected, which could damage buildings and crops.
  • Signal No. 2 is declared in Metro Manila, parts of Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, and other nearby provinces. Winds here could still be dangerous, causing minor damage to houses and trees.
  • Signal No. 1 covers many areas in Luzon, including Cagayan, Ilocos, Batangas, and parts of Leyte and Samar. These areas will feel the outer edges of the storm, with some rain and gusty winds.

When Will the Storm Hit?

Typhoon Pepito is expected to make landfall in Catanduanes late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. The storm is moving fast, at 20 kilometers per hour, with winds reaching 195 kilometers per hour and gusts up to 240 kilometers per hour. It is currently located just 145 kilometers east-northeast of Northern Samar.

What to Do Now

  • People living in areas under higher storm signals should stay indoors, secure their homes, and prepare emergency supplies.
  • Evacuation may be necessary in places prone to flooding or landslides.
  • Fishermen are advised not to go out to sea, as the waters will be very dangerous.

Stay Safe! Authorities urge everyone to listen to the weather updates and follow safety instructions. This is a very serious storm, and taking action now can save lives.
