Who is Han Duck-soo, South Korea’s Acting President Now?

Seoul, South Korea – After the impeachment of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, the country is facing one of its most intense political challenges in four decades. Stepping in as acting president is Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, a seasoned government official with over 30 years of experience. Han’s calm approach and deep knowledge of policy might be just what South Korea needs right now.

Why Han Duck-soo is Acting President

When parliament voted to impeach President Yoon, it meant he had to temporarily step down from his role. South Korea’s constitution states that the prime minister should take over as acting president in such situations. This transition comes during a difficult time, with the nation divided by political debates, threats from its nuclear-armed neighbor North Korea, and economic challenges.

Han Duck-soo’s Long Career in Government

Han Duck-soo, now 75 years old, has held many important roles under five different presidents, both conservative and liberal. His career includes jobs like:

  • Ambassador to the United States
  • Finance Minister
  • Trade Minister
  • Prime Minister (twice)
  • Head of think tanks and organizations

He also worked as South Korea’s ambassador to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and served as a board member for S-Oil, a South Korean company linked to Saudi Aramco.

Han’s Educational Background and Skills

Han holds a doctorate in economics from Harvard University. He is known for his expertise in managing economic issues, international trade, and diplomacy. Fluent in English, Han worked closely with the United States during his time as ambassador, helping to finalize the U.S.-South Korea Free Trade Agreement.

Challenges Ahead for Han

Han’s top priority as acting president is to ensure the government continues to function smoothly. This is especially critical with:

  • Political unrest caused by Yoon’s impeachment.
  • A slowing economy.
  • Tensions with North Korea.

But his time in this role could also face obstacles. Han himself is under investigation for his involvement in President Yoon’s controversial attempt to impose martial law. If found guilty, parliament could impeach him as well, in which case the finance minister would become the next acting president.

What Makes Han Stand Out?

Han is often described as someone who avoids taking sides in political fights. He has served under leaders from different political backgrounds and has earned respect for his rational decision-making and hard work. When President Yoon appointed Han as prime minister in 2022, he highlighted Han’s ability to work beyond political factions.

How Long Will Han Lead?

Han’s role as acting president could last for months, depending on how quickly the Constitutional Court decides Yoon’s fate. If Yoon is removed permanently, South Korea must hold a presidential election within 60 days. Until then, Han will be responsible for steering the country through these turbulent times.

Limited Powers, Big Responsibilities

South Korea’s constitution doesn’t clearly define what the prime minister can do as acting president. Most experts agree that Han should focus on preventing government gridlock without making major decisions. However, some believe he has the authority to act with the same powers as the president, given the lack of constitutional limits.

A Civil Servant Through and Through

Many who know Han describe him as a dedicated public servant who has remained neutral despite working under leaders with very different views. A former high-ranking official said, “Han is a civil servant who doesn’t take on a political color.”

As South Korea waits to see how its political crisis unfolds, Han Duck-soo’s steady leadership could provide the stability the country desperately needs.
