Josefina Lim, a former Montessori teacher from the Philippines, has built a remarkable life in Australia, dedicating her career to making a difference in the lives of young children. Fueled by her love for teaching, she established Joyful Learners Montessori House (JLMH) Family Day Care in 2015 on the sunny Gold Coast, where her journey continues to inspire.
Humble Beginnings in the Philippines
Josefina grew up as the youngest of five siblings in Tondo, Manila. Born to hardworking parents—her mother a seamstress and her father a maintenance worker at Panasonic—she learned the value of perseverance early on. She graduated from Jose Abad Santos High School and pursued a degree in BS Psychology at Far Eastern University (FEU).
Her teaching career began at OB Montessori in the Philippines, where she initially applied as a guidance counselor. Her potential was quickly recognized, and she transitioned to teaching Grades 2 and 3. Her time there nurtured her passion for education, and she later became a consultant at St. Martin Montessori in Angono, Rizal.
A New Chapter in New Zealand
In 1992, Josefina visited her sister in New Zealand, where a chance encounter opened doors to a teaching position at Portland House Montessori Pre-School in Auckland. Her career flourished there for four years, and during this time, she met her husband Johnny, who worked in an architectural firm.
After marrying and starting a family, the couple ventured into the motel business, managing the Claudelands Motel to balance work and family life. Their entrepreneurial spirit allowed them to thrive despite the challenges of running a nine-unit motel while raising two children.
Building a New Life in Australia
In 2001, the Lim family relocated to Gold Coast, Australia, drawn by its warm weather, stunning beaches, and family-friendly opportunities. Josefina explored various jobs, including working at a Montessori child care center, a school tuck shop, and even running small businesses like vending machines and a sandwich bar.
Her determination and passion for teaching led her and Johnny to open their own Montessori Child Care Centre in Southport in 2013. Two years later, they launched JLMH Family Day Care, offering children aged 2–5 a nurturing and nature-filled learning environment.
The Joy of Joyful Learners
Nestled beside a nature reserve, JLMH Family Day Care is a haven for young learners. The garden is alive with flowers, vegetable patches, and frequent visits from native wildlife like water dragons, parrots, and cockatoos. Josefina emphasizes respect, independence, and curiosity as core values, shaping children into lifelong learners.
“We instill care and respect for self, others, and the environment,” Josefina shares. “Montessori practice helps children become curious, independent, and eager to learn.”
Looking to the Future: Montessori for Dementia
Now nearing retirement, Josefina plans to apply the Montessori method to support dementia patients. Inspired by the approach’s focus on independence and meaningful engagement, she hopes to help older adults cope with memory loss while maintaining their dignity and sense of belonging.
“The Montessori way nurtures self-worth, independence, and personal growth,” Josefina explains. “It’s about supporting people through meaningful activities, even as they face challenges.”
A Legacy of Passion and Purpose
Reflecting on her journey, Josefina feels deeply grateful. “I’m blessed to do what I love while making a difference in others’ lives,” she says.
From humble beginnings in Tondo to building a successful career in Gold Coast, Josefina Lim’s story is a testament to hard work, passion, and the enduring impact of education. As she transitions into this next chapter of her life, her commitment to helping others remains unwavering.
