It was a bittersweet 80th birthday for former President Rodrigo Duterte, as he remains detained in The Hague under an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant. His daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, expressed her heartfelt wish—his release and safe return to the Philippines.
A Special Birthday Wish
On Friday, VP Sara released a statement asking Filipinos to pray for her father’s health and long life. She also urged everyone to pray for his freedom.
“Sa kanyang pagdiriwang ng kanyang 80th birthday, huwag nating kalimutan na ipagdasal sa Diyos na sana ay biyayaan pa siya ng mas magandang kalusugan at mas mahabang buhay.”
(As he celebrates his 80th birthday, let us not forget to pray to God that he will be blessed with good health and a longer life.)
Duterte, born on March 28, 1945, was arrested in the Philippines on March 11. He was swiftly transferred to the ICC detention facility in the Netherlands, where he is facing charges of crimes against humanity.
A Plea for His Release
VP Sara, who is currently in the Netherlands to handle legal matters, also called on supporters to continue hoping for her father’s return.
“Hilingin din natin sa Diyos na sana ay makauwi na agad si Pangulong Duterte sa Pilipinas.”

She thanked the thousands of Filipinos who have shown their support for Duterte, whether in the Philippines, the Netherlands, or elsewhere in the world. She noted that their prayers, rallies, and messages of encouragement mean a lot to him.

Meanwhile, the ICC clarified that Duterte can request temporary release, but he must follow strict conditions, including returning to court when required. His legal team is working on possible options to challenge the charges.
