Vice President Sara Duterte shared on Saturday that she had already won the 2022 presidential race in surveys and had the support of the people. However, she chose to give up the presidency to pursue other plans. She explained that she felt she needed to focus on different things beyond being president. Instead, she ran for vice president alongside President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Duterte’s statement came in response to accusations that she was behind the current political conflict. She denied this, saying the real issues began with terrorism, harassment, and threats against her staff. She also responded to the ongoing congressional investigation into her use of confidential funds, calling it a form of political persecution but confirming she would attend the next hearing.
Duterte also declined to comment on President Marcos’ stance against impeachment efforts against her. Senator Imee Marcos mentioned that impeachment could cause further division in the country, which could affect investor confidence and long-term economic plans. She urged Congress not to push for the impeachment but to resolve any issues through proper legal channels to avoid dividing the nation.
