The Fiji government announced on Thursday that police are investigating two serious incidents involving two crew members from Virgin Australia. The crew members were allegedly victims of theft and sexual assault in Nadi, a popular tourist city, on New Year’s Day.
The Virgin Australia crew members were on a layover in Fiji before their next flight the following day. The Fiji Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, explained that the two crew members had gone out to a nightclub in Nadi during their time off. After leaving the nightclub, they were allegedly attacked and robbed while trying to find their way back to their hotel.
Fiji police have said they are still investigating and have questioned a suspect who may be involved in the sexual assault. Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka of Fiji expressed regret about the events and reassured the public that the police investigation is ongoing.
Virgin Australia has confirmed they are aware of the incidents and have sent a team to Fiji to support the affected crew members. However, the airline has not shared further details about the situation.
Fiji is a well-known tourist destination, especially for visitors from Australia, New Zealand, and North America. The country welcomed almost 77,000 visitors in November alone.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is also aware of the reports but has not provided further comments. The investigation into what happened is still ongoing.
