Philippine Ambassador to the United States, Jose Manuel Romualdez, revealed that the US government plans to prioritize deporting illegal immigrants with criminal records or those linked to terrorist activities. This initiative is part of a broader effort under the Trump administration to address security concerns in different states.
Criminals and Terrorists Are the First Priority
Speaking in an interview on Super Radyo dzBB, Ambassador Romualdez explained that he obtained this information directly from US law enforcement officials. He emphasized that individuals with criminal backgrounds or connections to terrorism will be the first to face deportation.
“They will deport first those with criminal records and those involved in terrorist activities,” Romualdez stated.
Filipinos Advised to Take Action
The ambassador reiterated his earlier advice to Filipinos staying illegally in the US: don’t wait to be deported. Instead, he urged them to seek legal assistance to explore options for staying in the country.
“There are Filipino-American lawyers who are ready to help. They can assess if you have a chance to remain in America legally,” he said.
Romualdez also expressed concern about the potential exploitation of undocumented immigrants, warning that some may be forced to work under unfair conditions or receive wages far below the legal minimum.
How Many Filipinos Are Affected?
There are an estimated 300,000 to 350,000 Filipinos living illegally in the United States, according to the ambassador. These individuals could face significant challenges as the US government intensifies its deportation efforts.
Romualdez’s Meeting with Trump
Romualdez briefly met with President Donald Trump at the Trump International Golf Club in Florida, where he congratulated the president on his victory. During their conversation, Trump expressed his admiration for Filipinos, saying, “We love Filipinos.”
The ambassador described their exchange as warm and cordial, reflecting the positive relationship between the Philippines and the United States.
The Bigger Picture
This latest development underscores the Trump administration’s focus on immigration reform. While the deportation efforts aim to prioritize individuals seen as security risks, the broader impact on undocumented communities, including thousands of Filipinos, remains a pressing concern.
For those affected, legal assistance and early action are key to navigating these challenging times.
