UN Security Council to Discuss Israel’s Strike on Iran

NEW YORK — The United Nations Security Council is set to meet on Monday to talk about Israel’s recent attack on Iran, according to Switzerland, which is leading the council.

Iran asked for this meeting with support from Algeria, China, and Russia.

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, wrote to the council, saying Israel’s actions are a serious threat to peace and safety around the world and could make the region even more unstable. He also mentioned that Iran has the right to respond to these attacks when they choose to.

On Saturday, Israeli jets carried out three rounds of strikes on missile factories and other locations near Tehran, which Israel said was in response to Iran launching about 200 missiles at Israel on October 1. Israel has warned Iran not to retaliate after these latest strikes.

Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, dismissed Iran’s complaint, saying Iran is trying to use the UN to make Israel look bad. He emphasized that Israel has the right to defend itself and will do whatever it takes to protect its people.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on all countries involved to stop military actions, including in Gaza and Lebanon, and to work hard to avoid a bigger war, encouraging everyone to seek diplomatic solutions instead.
