Typhon Missiles Deployed to Strengthen PH Defense – NSC

The Philippines has taken a significant step in enhancing its defense capabilities with the deployment of the Typhon missile system. National Security Adviser Eduardo Año clarified on Saturday that this move is aimed solely at strengthening the country’s ability to protect itself and is not intended to provoke or undermine the security of any other nation.

Año emphasized the Philippines’ sovereign right to decide the best measures for its national security, stating, “Like any other nation, procuring advanced defense systems such as the Typhon missile launcher is a step toward ensuring we can defend our territory when needed. These systems are designed to boost our defense capabilities and are part of the ongoing modernization of our Armed Forces.”

He further highlighted that the Philippines has always been a peace-loving nation and has never initiated conflict in its history. However, the country remains vigilant and prepared to defend its sovereignty against any threats. “Our actions are aimed at preserving peace and stability in the region,” Año added.

China’s Response and Concerns

China, however, expressed concerns about the Philippines’ deployment of the Typhon missile system, suggesting it could trigger an arms race in the region. Mao Ning, a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, criticized the move, claiming it risks regional peace and security. She urged the Philippines to prioritize “peaceful development” and avoid escalating geopolitical tensions.

“By introducing the Typhon system in cooperation with the United States, the Philippine side risks surrendering its own security and increasing the potential for confrontation,” Mao said during a press conference.

Philippine Defense Secretary Defends the Deployment

Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. dismissed China’s claims, asserting that the deployment of Typhon missiles is “legitimate, legal, and beyond reproach.” Año also rebutted the notion that the move contributes to an arms race, labeling such comments as “unfounded speculation.”

What Is the Typhon Missile System?

The Typhon, also known as the Strategic Mid-range Fires System (SMRF), is a cutting-edge missile launcher developed by the United States Army. It is capable of firing advanced Standard SM-6 and Tomahawk missiles. In 2024, the Philippines deployed the Typhon system during joint military exercises with allied nations, showcasing its growing commitment to modernizing its defense infrastructure.

The Bigger Picture: South China Sea Dispute

The deployment of Typhon missiles takes place against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the South China Sea, a vital trade route where China claims nearly the entire territory, overlapping with areas claimed by the Philippines and other Southeast Asian nations.

In 2016, an international tribunal in The Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines, declaring China’s expansive claims in the South China Sea to have “no legal basis.” Despite this, China has refused to recognize the ruling and continues to assert its claims.

The Philippines’ Stand

Through these measures, the Philippines reinforces its commitment to defending its sovereignty while striving to maintain peace and stability in the region. As Año stated, “Our focus remains on safeguarding our territory and ensuring that we contribute to a secure and stable environment for all.”

The deployment of the Typhon missile system sends a clear message: the Philippines is prepared to defend its rights while promoting regional peace and cooperation.
