WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he will speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. This comes after positive meetings between American and Russian officials in Moscow over the weekend.
“A lot of work has been done. We want to see if we can stop the war. Maybe we can, maybe we can’t, but I think we have a very good chance,” Trump told reporters while flying back to Washington on Air Force One after a weekend in Florida.
What’s Trump’s Plan?
Trump is pushing for a 30-day ceasefire that Ukraine has already agreed to. However, Russia has not yet accepted. Meanwhile, both countries continued bombing each other, and Russian forces are trying to push Ukrainian troops out of the Kursk region—a territory in western Russia where Ukraine has held ground for months.
What Will Trump and Putin Talk About?
When asked what issues would be part of the ceasefire talks, Trump mentioned:
Land – Areas that Russia and Ukraine might agree to control separately. Power Plants – Key energy sources that both sides are fighting over.
Trump added that Ukraine and Russia have already discussed some of these topics, and the U.S. is now trying to help finalize a deal.
Why Is This So Important?
Trump has changed U.S. foreign policy by moving closer to Moscow. He has previously said Ukraine is harder to work with than Russia, which has angered Ukrainian leaders.
Last month, Trump had a tense meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House, which ended abruptly. Now, with Ukraine agreeing to a ceasefire, the pressure is on Russia to accept the deal and prove that Trump’s friendlier approach toward Putin can actually work.
