Former President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he will not participate in another debate with Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris. This news came just hours after Fox News invited both candidates to join a possible second debate on either October 24 or October 27.
Trump and Harris had their first debate on September 10. Since then, Trump has said he doesn’t want to have any more debates before the important U.S. elections on November 5. He also turned down an earlier invitation from CNN for a debate on October 23, which Harris accepted.
Fox News mentioned that a second debate could give each candidate a chance to share their final thoughts with voters. Just last week, Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, debated Trump’s running mate, U.S. Senator JD Vance.
In a message on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump firmly stated, “THERE WILL BE NO REMATCH,” adding, “SO THERE IS NOTHING TO DEBATE.” He believes it’s too late in the election season to have another debate.
Previously, Trump had debated then-Democratic candidate and President Joe Biden in late June. After that debate, Biden stepped away from the race because his performance wasn’t strong, and Harris took his place as the Democratic candidate. Since she entered the race, polls show that the competition has become very close, with some suggesting that Harris might have a slight lead over Trump.
During their debate on September 10, Harris challenged Trump on several topics, including his ability to lead, his support for abortion restrictions, and his legal problems.
