President-elect Donald Trump recently confirmed plans to use the U.S. military to help with mass deportations of undocumented immigrants. He said he would declare a national emergency over border security and use military resources to remove millions of undocumented people who crossed into the U.S. illegally during President Joe Biden’s time in office.
Trump has been focused on immigration throughout his campaign and promised to fix the border, especially with Mexico, which has seen a rise in illegal crossings. He shared a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, supporting the idea of using the military for deportations, calling it “true.”
Trump also mentioned his new team, including Tom Homan, who used to lead the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as the “border czar.” Homan previously told supporters that the millions of undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. need to start packing their bags.
Right now, there are an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S., and Trump’s deportation plan could affect around 20 million families. He has made strong statements about illegal immigration, saying there is an “invasion” of migrants, and during his campaign, he often criticized immigrants with harsh language.
Trump has said he would use an old law, the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, to speed up the deportations. This law was last used during World War II to hold Japanese Americans in internment camps, which some critics say was unfair.
Trump’s border policy has been a hot topic, especially with the number of people crossing illegally from Mexico. The U.S. government has struggled to control the border for years, but Trump’s approach aims to take stronger action against illegal immigration.
