A massive shakeup in U.S. foreign aid is happening! President Donald Trump has decided to fire nearly all USAID staff and shut down the agency—even as Myanmar struggles with a deadly earthquake.
What’s Happening with USAID?
USAID (U.S. Agency for International Development) has helped countries for over 60 years.
Trump’s administration, led by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is cutting thousands of jobs.
All remaining staff will be fired between July and September unless required by law.
The State Department will take over what’s left of the agency.
What About the Myanmar Earthquake?
A 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar and Thailand, killing over 1,600 people.
USAID used to lead global disaster relief efforts, but with staff cuts, it’s unclear who will step in.
China, Russia, Turkey, and India are expected to send aid first.
Reactions to the Decision
Experts Warn: Cutting USAID’s team could leave millions without help.
Jeremy Konyndyk (Refugees International): “This is a total abdication of U.S. leadership.”
Sarah Charles (Former USAID Official): “It’s devastating to watch in real time.”
Will the U.S. Still Help?
Trump says the U.S. will send aid to Myanmar.
The State Department claims they can still deploy Disaster Assistance Response Teams (DART), but no timeline is given.
Contracts for urban search & rescue teams were briefly canceled but reinstated.
What’s Next?
With over 80% of USAID programs canceled, will the U.S. still be a leader in global aid? Or is this a new era of American foreign policy? Stay tuned!
