Sara Duterte May Run for President in 2028

Vice President Sara Duterte revealed she is seriously thinking about running for president in 2028.

During a recent private trip to Japan, where she met Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), Duterte answered questions about her political plans. When asked if she would run for president in 2028, she responded, “Yes, ma’am. We are seriously considering.”

Although she didn’t officially confirm her plans or the position she might pursue, recent surveys show she is a favorite candidate for the presidential race.

For now, Duterte says her focus is on her current job as Vice President. However, she expressed concern about the state of the country, saying, “What’s happening now shouldn’t continue.” She believes the Philippines can improve if people work together and follow clear policies.

Facing Challenges

Vice President Duterte is currently dealing with three impeachment complaints. These complaints accuse her of misusing public funds, including ₱612 million in confidential funds. Investigations have pointed out issues such as receipts with wrong dates and unclear signatures.

Despite these allegations, the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) recently organized a massive rally supporting President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s stance against impeaching Duterte. Around 1.8 million people participated in the rally across the country.

Leaders and Critics Speak Out

Some lawmakers said Duterte has the right to run for president but questioned her claims about the country “backsliding.” They pointed to data showing progress under the current administration. They also said that if Duterte believes things are getting worse, she should back up her statements with proof.

Former senator Leila de Lima criticized the delay in acting on the impeachment complaints. She urged the House of Representatives to prioritize truth and accountability, saying, “The time to act is now.”

What’s Next?

For now, Congress will not act on any impeachment complaints until after the May 2025 elections. Duterte has not made any further comments about the issue, but her possible candidacy for 2028 has already sparked much debate.

Vice President Sara Duterte believes the Philippines can become a great nation if everyone works together. Whether or not she runs for president in 2028, only time will tell.
