MOSCOW — The Russian government has strongly opposed Japan’s plan to hold joint military exercises with the United States in areas close to Russia’s border later this month and in November.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it has made it clear to Japan that these military exercises are not acceptable. Russia also pointed out that these joint drills have been growing bigger every year and now even involve NATO countries, which are not in the region.
The ministry expressed disappointment, saying that Japan is ignoring Russia’s concerns on this matter. Russia also warned Japan that it will take necessary actions to protect its territory and sovereignty in response to the planned exercises.
