A powerful earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, sending people running from buildings in fear. The tremors were so strong that even in Bangkok, Thailand, hundreds of people fled into the streets, some still in bathrobes and swimsuits!
Where Did the Earthquake Hit?
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.7 and was only 10 km (6.2 miles) deep, making it very strong and dangerous.
Epicenter: Just 17.2 km from Mandalay, Myanmarโs second-largest city with 1.5 million people.
After the main quake, a powerful aftershock followed, adding to the chaos.
Buildings Collapsed, People Ran for Their Lives
In Mandalay, social media posts showed collapsed buildings and debris covering the streets. One witness described the terrifying moment:
โWe all ran out of the house as everything started shaking. I saw a five-story building collapse right in front of me! No one dares to go back inside.โ
Even in Yangon, Myanmarโs biggest city, people rushed outside in panic, fearing the buildings might fall.
Panic in Bangkok
The earthquake was so powerful that it was felt in Bangkok, Thailand, over 500 km away!
In the heart of the city, an office tower swayed for two minutes, with doors and windows creaking loudly.
Hundreds of office workers ran outside using emergency stairs, while some were so shocked that they froze in fear.
Loud screams filled the air as the building continued to move. Outside, people gathered in the sun, while medical staff helped those in shock, giving them chairs to sit down.
Are There Casualties?
As of now, Myanmar officials are still checking for casualties and damage.
A Myanmar Fire Services officer said:
โWe have started searching and checking around Yangon. So far, we have no confirmed reports yet.โ
With reports of collapsed buildings, people are fearing the worst as rescue operations begin.
A Night of Fear and Uncertainty
Many residents in Myanmar and Thailand are too scared to go back inside their homes and offices. The aftershocks could bring more destruction, and emergency teams are on high alert.
