PH Urges Filipino Immigrants to Apply for Dual Citizenship

The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) is encouraging Filipinos who have become naturalized citizens in other countries to reacquire their Filipino citizenship. This step allows them to enjoy the perks of dual citizenship without giving up their foreign nationality, giving them “the best of both worlds.”

Why Apply for Dual Citizenship?

CFO Policy Chief Rodrigo Garcia Jr. explained in a public briefing that reacquiring Filipino citizenship is simple and affordable, costing only $50 (around ₱2,900). Under Republic Act 9225 (Dual Citizenship Law), Filipinos who have gained foreign citizenship can take an oath at a Philippine Consular Office to retain or regain their Filipino citizenship.

Having dual citizenship offers several benefits:

  • Land Ownership and Business Opportunities: Dual citizens can still own land or establish businesses in the Philippines.
  • Participation in Philippine Elections: Thanks to Republic Act 10590 (Overseas Voting Act), dual citizens can vote in national elections even while living abroad.
  • Seamless Travel and Residence: Dual citizens can freely return to the Philippines without needing additional permits.

Supporting Economic Growth

Garcia emphasized that reacquiring Filipino citizenship isn’t just about personal benefits but also about contributing to the country. “We want them to be partners in economic development. By encouraging them to invest in the Philippines, we foster stronger ties with our overseas community,” he said.

Current Numbers

As of 2020, there were over 50,000 Filipinos with dual citizenship living in the Philippines, according to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority. The CFO hopes this number will grow as more Filipinos abroad recognize the value of retaining their ties to their homeland.

A Call to Action

The CFO invites all eligible Filipinos abroad to explore the possibility of dual citizenship. “Reacquiring your Filipino citizenship doesn’t cancel your foreign citizenship,” Garcia reassured. “It’s an opportunity to have the best of both worlds and stay connected to your roots while enjoying all the benefits your dual status brings.”

For more information, Filipinos abroad are encouraged to reach out to their nearest Philippine Consular Office.
