MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Embassy and consuls general across the United States have pledged to stand by all Filipinos, regardless of immigration status, as the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump signals stricter immigration policies.
Commitment to Filipinos
In a statement issued Thursday, the Philippine Ambassador and consuls general assured the Filipino community in the U.S. that consular services and support would remain available to all, no matter their immigration circumstances.
“The Heads of Posts understand the uncertainty felt by certain segments of the Filipino community in the United States following recent pronouncements by the incoming administration,” the officials said.
Their commitment includes engaging with U.S. officials to address concerns while adhering to American laws.
Meeting for Unified Action
The embassy officials held a strategic meeting on December 10 and 11 to discuss pressing issues, focusing on the anticipated immigration policies under the Trump administration. The meeting emphasized creating a unified and coordinated approach to help Filipino nationals during this transition period.
They stressed the importance of delivering effective and compassionate support to the Filipino community while respecting legal frameworks.
Trump’s Immigration Plans
President-elect Trump has repeatedly expressed plans to tighten immigration policies. These include:
- Declaring illegal immigration a national emergency.
- Launching a wide-scale deportation initiative targeting undocumented immigrants.
- Proposing a deal to protect “Dreamers,” individuals brought to the U.S. as children under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
Many Filipinos in the U.S. are reportedly worried about the potential impact of these changes. Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez acknowledged their concerns, particularly regarding Trump’s campaign promise to prioritize deportation efforts.
Support Amid Uncertainty
Despite these challenges, the Philippine Embassy emphasized its commitment to protecting and assisting all Filipinos in the U.S., ensuring their safety and rights while navigating these uncertain times.
The embassy also urged Filipinos to stay informed and connected with local consular offices for updates and assistance.
This assurance serves as a beacon of hope for many Filipinos as they prepare to face possible changes in U.S. immigration policies.
