The Philippine Embassy in South Korea assured Filipinos that it is safe to travel to the country despite a brief martial law declaration earlier this week. There are no border restrictions, flight suspensions, or disruptions to public transportation, including airports, seaports, and trains, the embassy confirmed on Thursday.
Travel Safety Reminder
In an advisory, the embassy reminded Filipinos traveling to South Korea to remain cautious, especially in areas where public gatherings might occur. This comes amid heightened political tensions that briefly raised concerns.
“Filipinos are respectfully advised to observe the usual caution when traveling, particularly in areas where public gatherings may occur,” the advisory read.
No Danger or Alert Levels, DFA Says
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) echoed the reassurance, with Undersecretary Eddie de Vega stating that no alert levels had been issued for South Korea. “It is not dangerous in the country at the moment,” de Vega added, urging Filipinos in South Korea to stay calm.
What Happened?
The tension began when South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in a late-night address on Tuesday. He explained that the move was aimed at eradicating what he described as “shameless pro-North Korean anti-state forces.”
However, the martial law declaration was short-lived. South Korea’s parliament unanimously overturned the decree with a 190-0 vote just hours after the announcement, restoring normalcy and reassuring citizens and travelers alike.
Traveling to South Korea
Despite the brief political turmoil, the situation in South Korea remains stable. The Philippine Embassy and DFA emphasized that travelers should feel secure while following usual safety measures.
As political tensions cool down, Filipinos planning to visit South Korea can proceed with their trips without worry, while staying alert and informed.
