NSC Says Security Council Change Shows No Rift in Security Team

National Security Council (NSC) Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya dismissed allegations of political infighting within the security sector following the council’s recent reorganization, asserting the team’s unwavering unity and support for the country’s leadership.

The reorganization, mandated by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s Executive Order No. 81, has sparked debate. The order removed Vice President Sara Duterte and former presidents from the council, fueling speculation from critics like former lawmaker Neri Colmenares, who claimed the changes reflect a power struggle between political dynasties ahead of the midterm elections.

Malaya Refutes Allegations

Speaking in a televised interview, Malaya denied any division within the security sector, describing claims by Colmenares and the Makabayan Bloc as baseless.

“This seems to stem from the Makabayan Bloc, Bayan Muna. You know how our friends there operate—they see issues where none exist. They’re trying to create conflict within the government,” Malaya said in Filipino.

He emphasized that the nation’s uniformed personnel and security officials fully support the leadership and the chain of command.

“Let me clarify: there is no rift in the security sector. Our uniformed personnel and government staff are 100% committed to the constituted authority and chain of command,” Malaya stressed.

President Marcos Clarifies Reorganization Goals

President Marcos defended the reorganization as a proactive measure to ensure the NSC adapts to evolving domestic and global challenges. He highlighted the importance of safeguarding national security to promote effective governance and stability.

“The goal is to make the NSC more resilient and responsive to current security needs,” Marcos explained.

Critics See Political Motive

Colmenares argued the changes are less about strengthening national security and more about political maneuvering. He pointed to Vice President Duterte’s removal from the council as evidence of a growing divide between the Marcos and Duterte camps.

“This is not just about national security—this is about political survival,” Colmenares stated.

NSC’s Role in National Security

The NSC, established as the primary advisory body for national security, plays a vital role in coordinating policies and providing technical support to the President. National Security Adviser and NSC Director General Eduardo Año defended the reorganization, emphasizing its necessity to address emerging challenges effectively.

“Our focus is on enhancing policy formulation to tackle national security concerns,” Año stated.

Despite differing opinions, the government continues to underscore its commitment to a unified and efficient security framework to protect the nation’s sovereignty and stability.
