MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine weather agency, Pagasa, announced that Tropical Storm “Kong-Rey” will enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) late Saturday night or early Sunday. Once inside PAR, it will be called “Leon.”
As of 11 a.m., the storm was about 1,630 kilometers east of Central Luzon, with maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts up to 80 kph. Moving west at 30 kph, Leon is expected to grow stronger, potentially becoming a severe tropical storm on Sunday and even a typhoon by Monday.
Although the storm’s path will stay far from land, its rain bands might bring rain to Extreme Northern Luzon. Leon could also affect the southwest wind, which may bring rains to Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
