MWSS rules out water service interruption

THERE will be no water service interruption in Metro Manila this month, despite the declining level in Angat Dam, the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) said Thursday.

The MWSS issued this statement after the National Water Resources Board granted MWSS’ request not to reduce its regular water allocation that comes from Angat Dam located in Norzagaray, Bulacan.

“With that, we were able to maintain the water allocation or the 4.3 billion liters of water a day for the entire metropolis,” said Patrick Dizon, manager of the MWSS Water and Sewerage Management Department.

Angat Dam supplies more than 90 percent of potable water to Metro Manila.

As of noon May 2, the MWSS official said, the water level of Angat Dam was at 187.12 meters, and the level continues to drop due to the lower volume of rainfall.

He said, however, this was still far from the critical level of 160 meters.

He said the MWSS, which has jurisdiction over the two main water concessionaires in Metro Manila — Manila Water and Maynilad Water Services — has been closely monitoring the water consumption, especially this month.

To ensure uninterrupted water supply, Dizon said they have allowed the lowering of the water pressure that goes to faucets in a bid to reduce users’ consumption.

“By this, we could also be able to reduce the wasted water out of leaks on damaged pipes,” he said.
