Every year in February, thousands of people pack their bags and head to Baguio City, also known as the Summer Capital of the Philippines. The main reason? The Panagbenga Festival! This month-long flower festival is a colorful celebration featuring grand parades, street dancing, and beautifully decorated flower floats that showcase the city’s thriving flower industry. Tourists from all over the country and even from abroad visit Baguio to witness the festivities and enjoy the city’s cool weather.

Beyond the Panagbenga Festival: Why Tourists Keep Coming Back to Baguio

A Glimpse Into Baguio’s Past

Baguio earned its title as the Summer Capital of the Philippines in the early 1900s, during the American colonial period. The city’s design was planned by architect Daniel H. Burnham, who wanted to create one of the most beautiful cities in the Philippines. He used a garden city concept, which meant designing open spaces, parks, and well-planned roads. Thanks to his vision, Baguio became a well-organized and stunning city.

One of the most historic buildings in Baguio is The Baguio Mansion House. Built in 1908, it was originally the summer residence of American governor-generals and later became the official summer home of Philippine presidents.

The Baguio Mansion House: Now a Presidential Museum

For decades, the Baguio Mansion House was off-limits to the public. But now, it has been turned into a Presidential Museum!

Opened by First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos, Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco, and House Deputy Speaker Duke Frasco, the museum showcases memorabilia, artifacts, and historical records from former Philippine presidents. Visitors can also see paintings of past leaders, documents, and replicas of their offices.

DOT Secretary Frasco believes this museum will not only educate people about the country’s past but also boost tourism and the local economy.
