President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said that the government is looking closely at everything former president Rodrigo Duterte said about the drug war and the extrajudicial killings (EJKs) that happened during his time in office. Duterte’s testimony will be reviewed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the police to understand its legal impact. Marcos mentioned that the government is waiting for reports from the police to see if they should file any cases based on what Duterte said.
The President pointed out that there are still many unanswered questions about who is responsible for the killings, especially for the families of victims who haven’t seen justice. The DOJ will keep investigating and looking at all the facts to decide if a case should be made.
Marcos also made it clear that the Philippines will not work with the International Criminal Court (ICC) despite Duterte’s challenge for the ICC to investigate him. However, the Philippines will still cooperate with the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) if it issues a Red Notice against Duterte. Marcos emphasized that the country will follow its obligations to Interpol, but it will not cooperate with the ICC.
