On Saturday, supporters of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. gathered at the People Power Monument along EDSA in Quezon City. Dressed in red and carrying banners that praised the President’s leadership, they came together to show their support for his government. The crowd began forming at around 10 a.m., with an estimated 1,200 people by the afternoon, according to the police. The gathering also caused part of White Plains Avenue to be closed for their program.
The People Power Monument honors the Filipinos who fought against the rule of President Marcos Sr. in 1986. This is where people gather every year to remember the EDSA People Power revolt, a peaceful uprising that led to the end of Marcos Sr.’s presidency.
Though it wasn’t clear how long the Marcos supporters planned to stay, their presence marked a show of loyalty to the current President. Nearby, another important location, the Our Lady of EDSA shrine, also saw gatherings of people, some of whom were reportedly paid to attend. These individuals supported former President Rodrigo Duterte and his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte.
