MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared November 4, 2024, as a national day of mourning to remember the lives lost and families affected by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, also known as Trami. The announcement was made by Malacañang on Saturday.
On October 30, President Marcos signed Proclamation 728, which orders that the Philippine flag be flown at half-staff across the country and in all Philippine government offices around the world on this special day.
In his proclamation, President Marcos expressed solidarity with the families and friends of those who died because of the storm’s destruction. He stated, “The nation deeply mourns this tragic loss, and joins the families and loved ones of our departed brothers and sisters in this moment of immense sorrow.”
As part of the day of mourning, flags will be lowered from sunrise to sunset to honor the victims of one of the deadliest storms to hit the Philippines this year. The President also requested that everyone offer prayers for the souls of those who lost their lives.
Storm Kristine, which struck the Philippines last month, resulted in 150 reported deaths and caused heavy rain, floods, and landslides that damaged many areas across the country. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that 168,039 people had to be evacuated to stay safe from the storm, with a total of 809,745 people displaced, and 1,351 people are currently in evacuation centers.
