Marcos: Pinoy Crew of M/V Galaxy Leader Now Free

Good News for Filipino Seafarers and Their Families
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has confirmed the safe release of 17 Filipino seafarers and the other crew members of the commercial ship M/V Galaxy Leader. After being held for over a year, the crew is now under the care of the Philippine Embassy in Muscat, Oman. They will soon return home to be reunited with their families.

How It All Started
The ordeal began on November 19, 2023, when the Bahamas-flagged car carrier was seized at sea by armed commandos belonging to Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi group. The vessel was later taken to the port of Hodeidah in northern Yemen, a region controlled by the Houthis. The ship’s crew consisted of nationals from the Philippines, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Mexico, and Romania.

A Global Effort to Secure Freedom
President Marcos expressed his gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik of Oman and his administration for mediating the situation and ensuring the safe release of the crew. “I commend the Philippine government agencies and private entities who worked tirelessly with foreign governments for over 429 days to make this happen,” Marcos said.

Protecting Filipino Seafarers’ Rights
Marcos also emphasized the importance of the recently signed Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers. This landmark law ensures the protection of Filipino seafarers’ rights, provides equal opportunities for education and training in the maritime industry, and aligns the Philippines with international standards and conventions.

“The Magna Carta is crucial in safeguarding the welfare of Filipino seafarers, promoting their full employment, and ensuring they have equal opportunities—regardless of gender or creed,” Marcos explained.

Immediate Repatriation Efforts Underway
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is now working to bring the 17 Filipino seafarers back to the Philippines as soon as possible. “We are focused on reuniting them with their long-suffering families. This success demonstrates that quiet diplomacy can achieve remarkable results,” the DFA stated.

A Moment of Celebration and Reflection
This event underscores the dedication of the Philippine government and its global partners in ensuring the safety and welfare of Filipino workers. It also highlights the critical role of international cooperation and the protection guaranteed by laws like the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers.

The safe return of these Filipino seafarers is a moment of joy for their families and a reminder of the country’s commitment to supporting its citizens, wherever they may be.
