President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has assured everyone that the Philippine government is working hard to protect overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families. He made this promise during the 2024 Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas held on Wednesday.
How the Government is Helping OFWs
In his speech, President Marcos explained the steps his administration is taking to ensure the safety and well-being of OFWs:
- Stronger Labor Agreements: The government is building better agreements with other countries to protect OFWs’ rights.
- Fighting Illegal Recruitment: Campaigns against illegal recruitment and human trafficking are in full swing.
- Emergency Help for OFWs: The Agarang Kalinga at Saklolo para sa mga OFW na Nangangailangan Fund provides quick assistance to OFWs in need.
- 24/7 Communication Lines: The One Repatriation Command Center stays open to help OFWs facing problems abroad.
- Safe Repatriation: OFWs caught in conflicts or natural disasters are brought home safely.
Marcos also praised the work of Philippine embassies and consulates worldwide, which he said are always watching out for Filipinos in foreign countries.
“We also maintain good relationships with countries that host our kababayans, ensuring they are treated well and welcomed warmly,” he said.
A Future Where Working Abroad is a Choice
The President shared his vision of a future where Filipinos work abroad by choice, not because they have to. He believes creating more jobs and opportunities in the Philippines is key to achieving this dream.
“Our goal is to make working overseas an option, not a necessity. We are working on reforms and economic programs to give Filipinos better opportunities here at home,” Marcos said.
In December 2022, Marcos talked about helping OFWs earn more through entrepreneurship. During his visit to Japan earlier this year, he shared his hope of creating enough jobs locally so Filipinos wouldn’t feel the need to leave the country for work.
Honoring Outstanding Overseas Filipinos
At the ceremony, President Marcos honored Filipinos and organizations abroad who bring pride to the nation. These awardees have made significant contributions in their communities, both locally and internationally.
“You represent the very best of our people and bring immense pride to our country,” he said to the awardees.
The awards, called Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas (PAFIOO), are given every two years. They recognize people and groups who have:
- Helped improve the welfare of OFWs.
- Contributed to national development.
- Boosted the global image of Filipinos.
Why It Matters
This shows how much the government values OFWs and their families. By supporting them abroad and creating opportunities at home, the government hopes to make life better for all Filipinos, whether they’re here or overseas.
