Massive wildfires are burning through Southern California, and many people, including Filipinos, have been affected. President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has asked the Philippine Consulate in Los Angeles to find and help Filipinos who need assistance.
Nearly 200 Filipinos Lost Their Homes
According to Philippine Consul General Adelio Angelito Cruz, around 200 Filipinos in Los Angeles have lost their homes because of the wildfires. This number might increase as more reports come in. Many of these Filipinos are now staying in evacuation centers, where they are safe for now.
Philippine officials in LA are also checking if the houses destroyed by the fire are covered by insurance, which could help affected families rebuild their homes.
Wildfires Are Very Dangerous
The wildfires have caused serious damage, with 24 people confirmed dead so far, according to reports. Unfortunately, some of the bodies were so badly burned that they need DNA tests to identify them. The Los Angeles county coroner’s office says it may take weeks to confirm who the victims are.
There’s no confirmation yet if any of the people who died were Filipinos.
Filipinos in Need of Help
Filipinos and Filipino Americans whose homes have been destroyed are asking for assistance. President Marcos has sent his sympathies to all those affected, and the Philippine Consulate in LA is ready to help. Filipinos in need can call the Consulate at (323) 528-1528.
Fighting the Wildfires
California firefighters are working hard to stop the fires, especially in areas like Palisades and Eaton, where the two largest fires are burning. However, a lawsuit has been filed against the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, accusing them of not properly managing water supplies needed to fight the fires.
A Message of Hope
President Marcos is making sure that Filipinos in California get the support they need during this tough time. While the wildfires have caused great loss, efforts are ongoing to help those affected and to prevent more damage.
