House to Investigate Vloggers Badmouthing QuadComm

The House of Representatives has announced its plan to investigate vloggers accused of spreading fake news aimed at damaging the reputation of the Quad Committee. Panel Chairperson Robert Ace Barbers shared this update during an interview on Super Radyo DzBB on Sunday.

According to Barbers, the House Committee Rule will form a “Tri Committee” tasked with investigating vloggers who are allegedly backed by illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) still operating within the country.

Why Is the Probe Necessary?

Barbers emphasized the need for a regulatory framework to address the actions of vloggers spreading misinformation. He stated, “We need to establish rules to ensure that vloggers don’t abuse their influence.”

Although Barbers refrained from naming any specific vloggers during the interview, he stressed that criticism is acceptable as long as it is focused on public officials’ official duties and functions.

The Role of Trolls and Fake News

In a privilege speech delivered on December 4, Barbers warned about the dangers of trolls and misinformation. “The ultimate goal of trolls is to create chaos and disorder by spreading false information, confusion, fear, and slander. We must not let them succeed. Law and order must be preserved to ensure peace and stability in society,” he said.

NBI Joins the Investigation

Barbers has requested the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to identify and investigate vloggers involved in spreading fake news. The NBI clarified that vloggers could face legal consequences for remarks that might incite sedition, as the right to freedom of expression is not absolute.

A Call for Regulation

The proposed Tri Committee aims to develop rules to curb the misuse of social media platforms and ensure accountability. The initiative underscores the importance of tackling fake news to preserve trust and order in society.

This investigation highlights the growing need for responsible use of online platforms, ensuring that criticism and information-sharing remain constructive and truthful.
