Fire Department Checking 9 Fires in NCR on New Year’s Day

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) revealed that it monitored nine fire incidents in the National Capital Region (NCR) during the early hours of New Year’s Day. However, the BFP clarified that this number is still unofficial and subject to verification.

Unofficial Fire Tally
According to Fire Superintendent Annalee Atienza, the BFP national headquarters received only one official fire report, but their unofficial records noted nine incidents in Metro Manila from 12:17 a.m. to 5:21 a.m.

“At the national headquarters, we received one official report. However, our unofficial tally in NCR shows nine fire incidents during this period,” Atienza shared in a radio interview.

Investigating Causes of Fires
The exact causes of these fires are still under investigation. Authorities are also checking if any were related to fireworks commonly used during New Year celebrations.

One significant fire occurred in a commercial building in Malabon City, which reached the third alarm level. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported in this incident or any of the others.

Atienza added that while some fires were caused by electrical issues, there’s no confirmed evidence yet linking the incidents to fireworks. She mentioned that the last fire incident involving firecrackers happened the previous day, at noon on December 31, 2024.

Fewer Fires Compared to Last Year
Atienza highlighted a notable decrease in fire incidents this year compared to last year’s New Year’s Day. In 2024, the BFP recorded 54 fire incidents, while only one official fire incident has been logged so far for January 1, 2025.

“This year’s numbers are significantly lower. The official report shows one fire incident today, compared to 54 incidents last year,” Atienza emphasized.

BFP on Full Alert
The BFP remains on red alert status until January 2, 2025. This means all firefighters are on standby for emergencies, with no personnel allowed to take leave.

The BFP continues to remind the public to stay vigilant and take precautions to prevent fire incidents, especially during holiday celebrations.
