Filipinos Rush for Last-Minute Trips Before New Year Countdown

As 2024 neared its final hours, many Filipinos made last-minute journeys to reunite with their families or loved ones for New Year’s Eve celebrations. Despite the rush, transportation hubs across the country showed varied levels of activity, reflecting the different travel patterns during the holiday season.

Busy but Calmer at PITX

At the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX), the number of travelers was noticeably lower compared to the packed days leading up to Christmas. Some passengers shared that they originally planned to travel after Christmas but couldn’t secure bus tickets because buses were fully booked. Others mentioned that work schedules left them with little time to travel until now.

One traveler, a father heading to his hometown, said, “I had to wait for my work break to finally go home and see my family for New Year’s. It’s been a long time.”

Quieter at NAIA Terminals

The scene was more relaxed at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1, with fewer people seen in the arrival areas. Many passengers had already arrived earlier in the holiday season to spend time with their loved ones.

However, at NAIA Terminal 3, the number of departing passengers was slowly increasing. A significant portion of these travelers were overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) heading back to their jobs abroad after spending their holiday vacation with family. It was a bittersweet moment as many were accompanied by loved ones to see them off.

One family, tearfully waving goodbye to a departing member, said, “We’re sad to see him go, but we’re thankful we got to celebrate Christmas and New Year together.”

A Time for Family and Tradition

For Filipinos, New Year’s Eve is a special time filled with family gatherings, festive meals, and traditions that symbolize hope and good fortune for the coming year. The last-minute travels highlight the deep importance of family bonds, even if it means enduring long lines, crowded terminals, or tight schedules.

As the clock ticks toward the New Year, these journeys remind us that no matter the challenges, Filipinos find ways to celebrate togetherness and make the holiday season unforgettable.
