The DFA also called for peace, saying,
“We urge everyone in Syria to avoid violence and protect civilians from harm.”
What Happened in Syria?
According to reports, Syrian rebels announced that they have overthrown President Assad, ending his 24 years in power. The rebels have taken control of Damascus, the capital city, and are working to fight “terrorist groups” in other areas like Hama, Homs, and Deraa.
Witnesses say there are no government soldiers in the city, and thousands of people are celebrating in the streets, shouting “Freedom!” after five decades of rule by Assad’s family.
At the Al-Rawda Presidential Palace, people were seen entering and even taking furniture out of the building. Rebels also freed prisoners from a large jail near Damascus, where thousands were held by Assad’s government.
One rebel group shared,
“We are happy to celebrate with the Syrian people as they regain their freedom.”
Assad Flees
President Assad reportedly left Damascus on Sunday for an unknown location. His allies, Russia and Iran, who supported him during the conflict, have also suffered a major setback as their influence in Syria is now weakened.
What’s Next?
The situation in Syria is still unfolding, and the DFA is closely watching what happens next. For now, Filipinos in Syria are advised to stay calm, stay safe, and keep in close contact with the Philippine Embassy for updates and assistance.
