Filipinos in South Korea Told to Avoid Protests and Rallies

The Philippine Embassy in South Korea has issued a clear reminder to Filipinos: Do not join any protests, rallies, or public demonstrations. This is to ensure they stay out of legal trouble while living or working in the country.

Why Filipinos Should Avoid Protests

The Embassy’s advisory, released on Sunday, emphasizes that South Korea’s Immigration Control Act strictly prohibits foreigners from participating in protests. Breaking this rule could lead to serious consequences, including possible deportation.

The Embassy stated in Filipino:

  • “Nais pong ipaalala ng Embahada ng Pilipinas sa lahat ng mga Filipino sa South Korea na umiwas sa pakikilahok sa anumang protesta, rally, o pampublikong demonstrasyon.”
  • “Inaabisuhan ng Embahada ang lahat ng ating mga kababayan na sumunod sa mga lokal na batas at regulasyon upang maiwasan ang anumang aberya sa kanilang pananatili sa South Korea.”

What Sparked the Advisory?

This reminder came after a wave of protests erupted in South Korea, calling for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol.

  • Martial Law Drama: President Yoon declared martial law on December 3, which triggered public outrage. The declaration was lifted within hours, but it fueled calls for his resignation.
  • Political Tensions: Despite apologizing for the martial law declaration, Yoon refused to step down. His ruling party’s lawmakers even boycotted the impeachment vote, adding to the controversy.

What Should Filipinos Do?

To stay safe and avoid complications, the Philippine Embassy advises all Filipinos in South Korea to:

  1. Follow local laws and regulations.
  2. Avoid joining any protests or rallies, no matter the cause.

The Bigger Picture

South Korea is known for its vibrant democracy and active protests, but foreigners, including Filipinos, are not allowed to participate in such activities. Joining protests can be viewed as interfering in the country’s internal affairs, which is a violation of the law.

Filipinos are urged to focus on their work or studies and respect the rules of their host country. The Embassy stands ready to assist anyone needing guidance on local regulations.

By staying informed and cautious, Filipinos in South Korea can ensure a peaceful and trouble-free stay.
