A Filipino police officer was one of the 67 people who tragically lost their lives in a horrific air collision in Washington, D.C. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla confirmed this heartbreaking news.
The victim was Police Colonel Pergentino Malabed, Jr., an officer from the Philippine National Police (PNP). He was in the United States on official duty when the accident happened.
Why Was Colonel Malabed in the U.S.?
Before traveling to the U.S., Colonel Malabed first went to India with two other colleagues—a non-commissioned officer and a non-uniformed personnel. Their mission was to inspect 2,675 all-purpose vests that were set to be delivered to the PNP.
On January 27, Malabed took five sample vests and flew to the United States for further testing.
As part of his official duties, he traveled to Kansas to meet with Police Colonel Moises Villaceran, the PNP’s Police Attaché in Washington, D.C.
However, instead of returning to the Philippines on February 2, Malabed made a last-minute decision to visit his brother in South Carolina. He booked a flight from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport—but sadly, this would be his final journey.
PNP Mourns the Loss of a Dedicated Officer
The PNP Public Information Office described Malabed as a committed and honorable officer who dedicated his career to protecting and serving both the PNP and the Filipino nation.
“His untimely passing is a great loss to the PNP. He served with honor, integrity, and dedication throughout his career,” the PNP said in a statement.
The PNP also promised to support his grieving family during this difficult time. Malabed’s wife is set to fly to the U.S. to personally confirm his identity and bring him home.
What Happened in the Washington Air Collision?
The deadly air collision happened on Wednesday night near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. A regional passenger jet operated by American Airlines was preparing to land when it collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter.
The plane, a Bombardier jet, had 60 passengers and four crew members onboard, while the helicopter carried a few Army personnel. The crash caused the plane to plunge into the Potomac River, leaving no survivors.
Among the victims were young figure skaters, passengers from Kansas, and military personnel. The full list of names has not been released yet.
Investigators Searching for Answers
Authorities don’t yet know how the accident happened. However, investigators have recovered the black boxes from the plane, which contain crucial flight data and recordings that may reveal the cause of the crash.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in the Philippines has expressed its deep sorrow over Malabed’s passing.
“We extend our sincere condolences to his family and to all the families of those who died in this terrible tragedy,” the DFA said.
As the world waits for answers, families and loved ones continue to mourn the worst U.S. air disaster in over 20 years.
