In Brussels, the European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, strongly criticized Russia for making nuclear threats, calling them “completely irresponsible.” This comes after President Vladimir Putin expanded Russia’s ability to use atomic weapons. Borrell reminded reporters that Putin’s past nuclear threats were also reckless, and warned that calling for nuclear war is dangerous and irresponsible.
Borrell also mentioned that Russia has agreed in the past that nuclear war should never happen, as it’s something no one can win. The EU meeting in Brussels focused on finding ways to help Ukraine in its ongoing fight, as the war enters its 1,000th day. Ukraine had recently used U.S.-made long-range missiles to strike Russian territory, which Russia called a dangerous new step in the war.
As the EU talks continued, Borrell emphasized that the fate of Ukraine is important for Europe’s future. He warned that if Russia succeeds in Ukraine, it could cost Europe far more than military support for Ukraine does now. Many EU countries agreed that they must continue supporting Ukraine, especially with uncertainty about U.S. support under a new president.
Borrell also said that Europe must increase its defense capabilities. NATO’s Mark Rutte joined the talks and stressed that Russia should not be allowed to win in Ukraine. Rutte and Borrell both agreed that Europe needs to ramp up its defense spending and capacity to better protect itself and support Ukraine in the future.
