The Department of Justice (DOJ) has started investigating Vice President Sara Duterte for possible violations of the Anti-Terrorism Law (Republic Act No. 11479) following comments she made in a viral video. During an online news conference, Duterte allegedly said that if she were killed, someone should kill President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Marcos, and Speaker Martin Romualdez.
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) issued a subpoena for Duterte to explain her remarks. DOJ Undersecretary Jesse Andres clarified that the Vice President was given a chance to clarify her words, as they seemed like a threat, which could be linked to terrorism under the law.
Section 4 of the Anti-Terrorism Law defines terrorism as acts that threaten or cause harm to a person’s life. Andres explained that if someone makes threats that could endanger a person’s life, including the President, this could be considered terrorism. He emphasized that threats against the President are treated seriously as national security matters.
The NBI confirmed that VP Sara will appear before them on Friday to provide clarification on her statements. Both the DOJ and NBI reassured the public that the investigation would be fair and follow due process. They also emphasized that no harassment would be involved in the investigation.
While the investigation focuses on potential threats, the DOJ is also closely watching the House of Representatives’ hearings on the use of confidential funds in the Office of the Vice President. Andres noted that if there were any misuse of public funds, this would also be investigated for possible corruption charges.
The DOJ stressed that any legal actions would only be pursued after a thorough investigation and when enough evidence is gathered.
