Does Robredo Disagree with House Investigation into Duterte’s Funds?

Former Vice President Leni Robredo, who is now the chair of the Angat Buhay NGO, has been in the news recently due to a claim about her stance on the House Quad Committee’s investigation into the use of confidential funds by her successor, Vice President Sara Duterte. But did Robredo really speak out against the investigation?

A TikTok account (@redhawkphilippines) shared a post that claimed Robredo disagreed with the House Committee’s inquiry into how Duterte’s office spent millions in confidential funds. According to the TikTok post, Robredo was quoted as saying that confidential funds are meant for general use and do not need to be detailed in a report, unlike budgets that have specific items to cover. The post suggested Robredo thought it was unreasonable for the committee to ask for detailed reports of every peso spent.

However, after checking Robredo’s official social media pages and news sources, there are no reports or interviews confirming that she made these statements. Robredo’s official social media and public appearances show she is focused on her work with the NGO and does not appear to have commented on this particular issue.

The House Quad Committee, which is made up of lawmakers from the Philippines House of Representatives, has been holding hearings on the use of confidential funds by the Office of the Vice President (OVP) and the Department of Education. The investigation is looking into how these funds were spent, especially when it comes to some unusual names in the records of the OVP’s confidential fund use.

In 2022, under Vice President Duterte, the OVP spent P125 million in just 11 days. Lawmakers have raised concerns over how the funds were used and whether the office’s special disbursing officers (SDOs) were even aware of the expenses.

The issue of confidential funds has been controversial because they are intended to be used for confidential matters, but the House Committee wants more detailed reports, including itemized expenses.

In contrast, when Robredo was Vice President, she did not have any confidential funds at all. Her office’s budget was much smaller, with a maximum of P900 million in 2021, far less than the P4.2 billion in funds Duterte’s office has received in just two years.

For now, there is no confirmed statement from Robredo about the investigation, and it seems the TikTok quote may not be from her at all.
