The Hague, Netherlands – Protests have been happening in different parts of the world, especially outside the International Criminal Court (ICC), as former President Rodrigo Duterte faces serious charges. Because of this, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is reminding Filipinos abroad to respect the laws of their host countries.
What’s Happening?
Duterte was arrested in Manila last week and is now being held in a prison facility while facing charges of crimes against humanity at the ICC. This has led to two groups of protesters:
One group supports Duterte and wants him to be free.
Another group is against Duterte and wants justice for alleged human rights violations.
These protests are happening in the Philippines, the Netherlands, and other countries where Filipinos live.
What Did DMW Say?
DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac reminded Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) that they should always follow the laws of the country they are in.
“Filipinos abroad should always be good residents and respect the laws of their host country,” Cacdac said.
He explained that whether supporting or opposing Duterte, protesters must follow the rules of public gatherings, especially in places like the Netherlands.
What Are the Rules in the Netherlands?
The Dutch Constitution allows people to protest freely. However, there are important rules to follow:
You cannot break other laws or put anyone in danger.
Protests should not disturb public order.
Gatherings near important buildings, like the ICC, must not disrupt their work.
This means that any protest—whether in favor of or against Duterte—must be peaceful and legal.
Why Are Many OFWs Supporting Duterte?
Duterte has always had strong support from OFWs because of the programs he introduced to help them while he was president. Many OFWs believe that he made brave decisions for the country’s future.
However, the DMW also reminded Filipinos to stay open-minded and understand that leaders make decisions for the entire nation, even if not everyone agrees with them.
More Protests Coming Soon?
Duterte supporters have announced that they will hold a bigger protest outside the ICC in the coming days.
The situation is getting more intense, and people from both sides remain passionate about their beliefs. What will happen next? Stay tuned!
