Commission on Filipinos Overseas calls for justice over death of Fil-Am nurse

The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) on Wednesday urged authorities to bring to justice those behind the death of Filipino-American nurse Melissa Jubane-Llantero of Portland, Oregon in the United States.

In a statement on Wednesday, the CFO assured that it stands together with the Jubane family members as they grieve and seek justice for Melissa’s death.

“We join Melissa’s family in their grief and stand in solidarity with them as they seek answers and justice for this senseless tragedy,”  the CFO said.

The CFO added, “It is imperative that those responsible for this heinous act are held accountable, and we call on the authorities to pursue justice with the urgency and rigor that Melissa deserves.”

Jubane, a 32-year-old cardiac nurse at the St. Vincent Medical Center, was confirmed dead by the Beaverton Police Department in Oregon days after she was reported missing on Sept. 4.

She had just married fellow Filipino-American and US Navy officer Bryan Llantero before her death.

“Melissa’s life was tragically cut short in an unimaginable act of violence just days after she returned home from her beautiful wedding in Hawaii… Their story was one of hope, joy, and the promise of a bright future, making this loss all the more heartbreaking,” the statement read.

Jubane is remembered as a compassionate nurse, a beloved friend, and a cherished member of the community, the CFO said.

“Her dedication to caring for others was evident in her work, and her absence leaves a void that can never be filled,” it added.

After marrying Bryan in Hawaii, Jubane returned to her apartment and reportedly went to work on Sept. 3. She did not show up for duty during her morning shift the next day.

While authorities have yet to provide details on her death, her 27-year-old neighbor was arrested in relation to the incident.

The CFO called for the accountability and for authorities to pursue justice with “urgency and rigor that Melissa deserves.”

“We will continue to advocate for the truth and justice that her life and legacy so rightfully deserve,” it said.
