Comelec Says Quiboloy Can Run in 2025 Elections

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has officially allowed Apollo Quiboloy, a detained religious leader facing serious legal charges, to run for senator in the 2025 elections. This decision came after Comelec en banc rejected a motion for reconsideration filed by another senatorial aspirant, Sonny Matula of the Workers and Peasants’ Party (WPP). Matula had sought to overturn an earlier ruling by the Comelec First Division, which allowed Quiboloy’s candidacy.

Why Was the Motion Denied?

In its resolution, Comelec en banc stated that Matula’s motion lacked merit and failed to present valid grounds to reverse the First Division’s decision. The en banc declared:

“The First Division’s decision was based on sufficient records and not contrary to law.”

The resolution emphasized that Matula’s arguments were already thoroughly examined by the First Division. Furthermore, procedural issues in Matula’s petition—such as combining multiple remedies—also contributed to its dismissal.

Legal Controversies Surrounding Quiboloy

Apollo Quiboloy, currently detained at Pasig City Jail, is facing multiple charges, including child sex trafficking and human trafficking. Critics argue that these serious accusations render him incapable of running a nationwide campaign.

Matula and the WPP claim that allowing Quiboloy to run “mocks the electoral process” and exposes inconsistencies in Comelec’s treatment of candidates. They highlighted the case of Sultan Subair Guinthium Mustapha, a Muslim leader declared a nuisance candidate, contrasting it with Quiboloy’s approval.

The WPP stated:

“Quiboloy’s status as a person deprived of liberty makes it impossible for him to engage with voters or conduct legitimate campaign activities.”

Comelec Defends Its Decision

Despite the criticisms, Comelec maintained its stance. The en banc explained that the procedural rules and substantive issues were addressed thoroughly by the First Division. The resolution was signed by all seven Comelec commissioners, including chairman George Garcia.

Quiboloy’s Independent Bid

On October 21, 2024, Quiboloy reaffirmed his intention to run as an independent candidate in Eleksyon 2025. This came after disputes within the WPP led to two separate lists of authorized signatories being submitted to Comelec.

While critics call for Comelec to address alleged inconsistencies and procedural flaws, the decision stands, affirming Quiboloy’s senatorial bid despite his legal troubles.

As the 2025 elections approach, this ruling is expected to spark further debates about justice, fairness, and the integrity of the electoral system.
