China is sending its largest naval fleet to the waters near Taiwan in almost 30 years, making Taiwan feel more threatened than before, according to Taiwan’s defense officials. This large fleet is part of China’s military actions in the region, which have been growing since President Lai Ching-te of Taiwan finished his Pacific tour last week, visiting places like Hawaii and Guam.
The Taiwanese military raised its alert level because China reserved airspace and sent out more ships and aircraft. They’ve noticed more ships in the area—about 90 in total, which is very concerning. China has not confirmed if these are military drills or just activities, but the increase in ships and planes makes Taiwan feel unsafe.
China has been creating “walls” in the Pacific, one near Taiwan’s Air Defense Zone and another further out. This shows China’s intention to control the waters near Taiwan and make it harder for other countries to interfere. Taiwan’s defense ministry also noticed 47 Chinese military planes flying around Taiwan recently, and some of them were practicing blocking foreign ships and aircraft.
This is part of China’s ongoing pressure on Taiwan, which it considers part of its territory. However, Taiwan insists that only its people should decide its future, rejecting China’s claims. The situation is tense, and China’s military presence in the area continues to grow.
