China Calls Out PH Ambassador Over Sea Dispute Laws

Manila/Beijing — China called in the Philippine ambassador on Friday to complain about two new Philippine laws that claim parts of the South China Sea, a disputed area both countries argue over.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed the Maritime Zones Act and the Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act into law. These laws aim to clarify the Philippines’ sea boundaries and protect its waters.

China was upset, saying the new Philippine laws cover areas like Scarborough Shoal and the Spratly Islands, which China also claims. China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Mao Ning, said these laws are illegal and interfere with Chinese territory.

Back in 2016, an international court ruled against China’s claim over most of the South China Sea. However, China ignored this ruling, while the United States and the Philippines support it.

President Marcos said the new laws would help the Philippines safely use its sea resources and ensure that Filipino fishermen can work without fear of harassment.

“Our people, especially our fishermen, should be able to work without fear,” said Marcos. “We must use the resources in our waters for our country’s benefit.”

China, on the other hand, says the new laws create more problems. Mao Ning urged the Philippines to stop making moves that could make the situation worse.

China has its own laws for the South China Sea and often uses its coast guard ships to enforce its claims. Many times, China accuses other countries’ boats of entering its territory, leading to clashes.

Philippine officials admit these new laws might increase tensions with China. Senator Francis Tolentino, who helped create the laws, said he expects China to ignore them but hopes the international community will support the Philippines.

“China may not accept our laws, but getting support from other countries can make our position stronger,” said Tolentino.
