Big Crowd Joins INC Peace Rally at Quirino Grandstand on Jan 13

On Monday, January 13, thousands of people began gathering early at the historic Quirino Grandstand in Manila for a nationwide peace rally organized by the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC). The event aimed to promote unity and harmony across the Philippines and has captured the attention of Filipinos from all walks of life.

Why Was the Peace Rally Held?

The INC has long been known for its efforts to foster peace within communities, and this rally was no exception. In an interview aired on the television program “24 Oras Weekend,” several INC members shared their heartfelt reasons for participating.

One attendee explained that their presence was a way of showing their desire for peace in the country. Another member expressed their concerns about the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte, emphasizing that the nation should prioritize more urgent issues.

“There are so many problems in the Philippines right now,” the member said. “Let us not focus on the impeachment issue for the time being.”

When and Where Did the Rally Take Place?

The rally was scheduled to start at 4 p.m. and end by 6 p.m. It was not just limited to Manila but also held simultaneously in 13 other locations across the country, reflecting the scale and importance of the event. Organizers estimated that 1 million people participated nationwide.

INC’s Stand on National Issues

The INC emphasized its support for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s position against the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte. Edwil Zabala, the spokesperson for the INC, highlighted the need for leaders to focus on solving the country’s pressing issues instead of being mired in conflicts.

“There are many things our citizens need that must be addressed,” Zabala stated. “These cannot be achieved if all we see is conflict. Perhaps our fellow Filipinos who also desire peace will agree with the opinion expressed by President Marcos Jr.”

Who Was Invited?

When asked if former President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Sara Duterte were invited to the event, Zabala clarified that everyone was welcome. This open invitation reinforced the inclusive spirit of the peace rally, aiming to unite people regardless of political affiliation.

Rules for Politicians: No Campaigning Allowed

With the 2025 Midterm Elections approaching, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) issued a reminder to political candidates: no campaigning during the peace rally. The goal was to ensure that the event remained focused on peace and unity, not on advancing political agendas.

Ensuring Safety and Managing Crowds

To maintain order, thousands of personnel from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) were deployed. Their duties included managing traffic, ensuring the safety of attendees, and assisting with crowd control.

Some local government units even declared a suspension of work and classes on January 13 to accommodate the influx of participants and ease logistical challenges.

Traffic and Early Turnout

By 3 p.m., traffic around the Quirino Grandstand was already heavy, with long lines of vehicles stretching all the way to the Anda Circle. The overwhelming turnout demonstrated the dedication of the participants and underscored the rally’s significance as a collective call for peace in the nation.

A Hopeful Message for the Future

Through this large-scale gathering, the Iglesia ni Cristo has once again shown its unwavering commitment to promoting harmony and addressing societal issues. The rally served as a reminder that Filipinos, united in their desire for peace, can come together to create a brighter future for the nation.
