Beloved Actress Gloria Romero Dies at 91

MANILA, Philippines — Gloria Romero, fondly known as the “Queen of Philippine Cinema,” passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at the age of 91.

Her daughter, Maritess Gutierrez, shared the heartbreaking news through a social media post. She expressed gratitude for the love and support the family has received during this difficult time.

“To our dearest family, relatives, and friends: It is with great sadness to announce the passing of my beloved Mother, Gloria Galla Gutierrez aka Gloria Romero, who peacefully joined our Creator earlier today, January 25, 2025,” Maritess wrote.

She added, “In this time of loss, our family deeply appreciates the support, prayers, sympathy, all the lovely messages, and heartfelt condolences that we’ve received. She will surely be missed dearly.”

Final Farewell
The wake for Gloria Romero will be held at Arlington Memorial Chapels, Hall A, on Araneta Avenue, Quezon City. Family, friends, and fans are welcome to pay their respects starting at 1 p.m. daily. A novena prayer will follow at 5 p.m., with a mass scheduled at 6 p.m.

Gloria’s passing has left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry. Veteran actress Lovely Rivero paid tribute to her “Tita Glo” on Instagram, sharing heartfelt photos and a touching message.

“You will never be forgotten, Tita Glo. Rest well in God’s loving embrace. A round of applause for a life well lived,” Rivero wrote. She also prayed for strength for Romero’s family during this challenging time.

Gloria Romero’s illustrious career spanned over 70 years, during which she appeared in more than 250 films and television productions. She won numerous prestigious awards, including:

  • FAMAS Awards: Best Actress for Dalagang Ilocana (1954) and Tanging Yaman (2000); Best Supporting Actress for Nagbabagang Luha (1988).
  • Gawad Urian Awards: Best Actress for Tanging Yaman (2000); Best Supporting Actress for Magnifico (2003).
  • Metro Manila Film Festival Awards: Best Actress for Tanging Yaman (2000) and Rainbow’s Sunset (2018); Best Supporting Actress for I Think I’m in Love (2002).

Romero was celebrated as one of the brightest stars during the Golden Age of Philippine Cinema. In recognition of her remarkable contributions, she received several Lifetime Achievement Awards from major institutions, including the FAMAS, Gawad Urian, Luna Awards, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB), and the Film Development Council of the Philippines.
